Up & Up 🚀

Lily lives ! Just thought to let you know 🙂 2016 thus far has been incredibly busy. So many things were happening at the same time these past two weeks and it’s only now that I can finally breathe !

❤ Lily Update ❤

01 Jan – I painted my room lilac !  My obsession with purple is somewhat worrisome but the colour is beautiful and helps me calms down. I also have a “Lily Corner” where I relax and read 🙂 I am also thinking of putting up some lights and décor to make it even more restful and leisurely ( any tips and advice welcome :)).

My Lily Corner 🙂 It needs some work but it should be awesome in the next couple of weeks ❤

04 Jan – Started Neurosciences for my third year classes ! Neurology is quite fascinating. Topics like somnambulism , idiot savants , Sherlock’s Mind Palace , the chemistry of psychopaths amongst a lot of other topics really interest me. And no , the neurosurgeons don’t look like Derek Shepherd (I’m not yet sure if that disappoints me or not).

07 Jan – Wrote my supplementary exam . . .

08 to 13 Jan The agony of waiting for my results ! I drove myself crazy imagining scenarios wherein I didn’t pass and had to repeat my second year just to do that ONE module. At my university you can’t do clinical rotations from one year without passing all the modules and rotations from the previous year.  I’ll write a little more about this at a later stage.

14 Jan – Got the results for my exam and . . . I PASSED 🙂 I’m really,  really glad that I passed because a lot of my holiday was dedicated to studying. I felt so relieved upon seeing my result. I could finally start focussing on Neuro and marvelling at the brain and it’s awesomeness.

In between all of that there’s been registration woes ,horrible heat waves and general beginning of the year administration drama.

Third Year at a Glance

Third year promises to be an exciting year . We start our clinical rotations this year #realmedicine  :). My scrubs are on the way and I’m in the process of acquiring comfortable shoes for when I’m on call (which is really hard because practicality and style are surprisingly incompatible in shoes).

We have three theory modules that will alternate with five clinical rotations. My schedule this year is as follows:

  1. Neurosciences 1
  2. Clinical Rotation : Family Medicine
  3. Neurosciences 2
  4. Clinical Rotation: Surgery (If my track record is anything to go by , I’ll probably be on call on my birthday!)
  5. Musculoskeletal System 1
  6. Clinical Rotation: Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  7. Musculoskeletal System 2
  8. Clinical Rotation : Paediatrics and Child Health
  9. Haematological System
  10. Clinical Rotation: Internal Medicine

My plan this year is to keep calm and work purposefully. I will be focussing more on my academic work. I don’t how that will affect other spheres of my life yet but I hope to maintain a healthy balance throughout the year.

Lots of Lily Love ❤ ❤ (LOLL)

    1. Thank you 🙂 Yeah , medicine here is definitely structured , sometimes too structured 😛 But I suppose it’s how they make sure we’ve learnt everything we need to by the end of our six years .

  1. Whhhoooooop congrats on passing your supp!!!!! That’s great news!
So excited for you to be starting clinical rotations. You might feel a little frustrated in starting with family med because all your classmates will be bragging about their procedures, but on the other hand it’s a really cool rotation to ease yourself into the whole business.
And as for shoes: Green Cross is great, but normal comfy running shoes are by far the best I’ve ever worked in.
    Good luck! Don’t be a stranger 😉

    1. Thank you !!! 🙂 I definitely plan on using the family med rotation to ease myself into things, everything after that seems really hectic 😛 Do you have any tips for rotations and how not to get lost in Tygerberg (that’s my number one fear at the moment ) 😀
